Student constructs hamster-powered mobe charger

Hamster Power!!

We've often wondered for what purpose exactly hamsters were put upon this earth, and now we know: to charge mobile phones.

Sixteen-year-old Peter Ash, of Somerset, finally cracked this age-old poser after his long-suffering sister complained of pet hamster Elvis scuttling away for hours during his nocturnal exercise wheel regime.

Ash told Ananova: "I thought the wheel could be made to do something useful so I connected a system of gears and a turbine." He then patched the output to his mobe's charger and voila! - free hamster energy at around thirty minutes' talktime for every two hamster wheel minutes.

Surprisingly - and considering all the current moaning about falling exam standards, etc, etc - Ash only got a "C" for this contribution to his GSCE science course and, undoubtedly, a clean-energy future for all our children. Perhaps if he'd knocked together a desktop cold fusion reactor powered by supercharged, neutron-emitting guinea pigs suspended in deuterium gas he might have earned himslef an "A"

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch is a village on the island of Anglesey in Wales. Situated on the Menai Strait close to Menai Bridge and Bangor, it is best known for having the longest officially recognised place name in the United Kingdom, and one of the longest in the world. It is signposted on surrounding roads as Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, and generally known as Llanfairpwll or Llanfair locally. The name is also seen shortened to Llanfair PG, which is sufficient to distinguish it from the many other Welsh villages with Llanfair in their names.

In Vino veritas.

I started learning about wine while in the NAVY, I was station on a carrier floating around in the Mediterranean and decided that every time that I got to port try some of the local wines and foods of the different regions that I visited. Once I got back to the U.S. I decided to continue learning about wine, I got a part-time job with Whole Foods in Oak Park in the specialty section and there I got to try wines form all over the world.

The best way to journey in to this world of wine is to go to your local wine shop or market and ask the people that work there what they like and pair the wine with food.

Good mix of food & wine I have tried over the years:

1. Cabernet Sauvignon and Dark Chocolate.
2. Riesling, pears and Camembert.
3. Champagne and strawberries with dash of Grand Marnier.
4. Rose Wine (Yes there are good Rose Wines) & pork loin.

I hope that this list will give someone the desire to go out and try some good Vino.

In Vino veritas!

Remote-controlled humans

This is weird!!! But Cool.

Galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) isn’t a new technology, but it’s seeing some new application via Japan’s NTT Communication Science Labs: remote-controlled people. They’ve developed a headphone apparatus that delivers an electrical current to a mastoid worn behind the ear, which actually shifts one’s balance toward the anode. The stronger the applied current, the stronger the pull — strong enough to knock you off balance and alter the course of your movement. NTT is showing off the remote-controlling headphone system at SIGGRAPH, and has plans to commercialize the technology for use in gaming, and flight simulators. Oh, and, don’t miss the video on this even though it’s in Real format — you’ve never seen anyone so happy about being remote-controlled in your life.

Apple - Mighty Mouse - Design

Apple - Mighty Mouse - Design

I like this mouse.

Like its namesake, Mighty Mouse puts powerful precision in a pint-sized package. With all its clicking capability tucked neatly under the seamless top shell, Mighty Mouse boasts drop-dead good looks, too. And then there’s that ingenious Scroll Ball — the tiniest such mechanism ever used in an input device. No wonder it’s a wonder.

Watch Your Television Anywhere There's Broadband

TiVo revolutionized the way we watch television, letting us timeshift television and record shows without even knowing what channel or time it's on. Sling Media with their G4 Best of CES 2005 award-winning Slingbox, tackles the one thing even TiVo can't do. They call it “placeshifting,” the idea of watching television wherever there's access to the Internet. There are no DVDs to burn or files to transfer to a notebook. The Slingbox is elegant from initial setup to usability, but keep in mind that broadband speeds are required on both ends.

Sling Media :: What is it

Sling Media :: What is it

The Slingbox is a compact and elegantly designed, state-of-the-art electronic device that connects to the back of your TV. It redirects, or “placeshifts,” the TV signal from your cable box, satellite receiver, or digital video recorder (DVR) to your computer or laptop of choice, no matter your location — so long as you have a high-speed Internet connection. This utterly unique device will transform the way you watch TV. Whether you want to watch your soaps in the laundry room, or catch the big game during a conference call, or watch your local news from China, the power is now in your hands.
